ELD Rule with Full Implementations
The electronic logging device becomes important for the 2017 tax year. The trucks which are old and consist of Automatic Onboard Recording Devices (AOBRDs) got two years’ time to switch their vehicles to ELDs. In the current tax year 2020, the truckers must use ELDs to know the exact timing hours of truck drivers. Many truckers don’t feel it comfortable to having ELDs on the trucks. But using ELDs make truckers easy and simple. All the ELDs which placed in the vehicles can sync with that truck’s engine. Therefore, the trucker timing hours will automatically be tracked. Also, it is well known by the trucks that the total number of miles that vehicles traveled around the states. It is very useful for IFTA purposes.
Changes made to Driver Hours of Service
Along with the ELD changes, there are also some changes made for the Driver Hours of Service.
- The two hours of time added to the regular timings of a truck driver. short-haul drivers can travel with their vehicles from 12 hours to 14 hours. Also, there is a change in the miles of a vehicle. It can be limited between 100 to 150 miles.
FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse
Now the rules became strict for drug and alcohol violations. To recognize the drug and alcohol violations in every state, the FMCSA implemented a new online database for commercial truck drivers. Every truck holder should populate the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse database with their employee DOT drug and alcohol violations. This may help the truckers to get the other career for the truckers by being away from the drug or alcohol issues.
New Overtime Laws
A new law is released on January 1, 2020, by DOT. This law helps the truckers to increase the standard salary pay level for full-time workers. Also, it helps to lower the standards for overtime pay for truckers. According to this law, the truckers treated as non-exempt who ears less than $35,568 per year. This law will not affect the truckers who are getting pay for the miles. After these DOT Regulations, there are 1.3 million workers found who are newly eligible for overtime pay.
Entry-Level Driver Training
Every new trucker who finished their entry-level driver training must update their information. The new drivers need to finish their training program to get Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
